Introduction to Nahum – A continuation of Nineveh, a wealthy & evil city.
100 yrs earlier Nineveh worshiped weather & sex gods, sacrificed babies to gods, & had cancel culture against their societal/political opponents. Does this sound familiar!?
God sent Jonah to call for Nineveh’s repentance or face complete destruction. Upon their repentance, God mercifully spared them.
Future generations later then returned to wickedness.
Nahum 1:1–2 “The oracle of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.”
Little is known about Nahum (“compassion,” “consolation,” or “comfort”), he is closely identified with Obadiah as having a message for a foreign nation.
Nahum was “the Elkoshite”, so he evidently came from the town Elkosh; its location is not yet discovered. Since he was a Jewish prophet & evidently lived after the fall of Samaria in 722 B.C., a location in Judah seems most likely to Dr. Constable, et.al.
