Proverbs 9:8–9: “Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.”

Similarly, in athletics, the great are always learning. Years ago, the Manhattan Mercury published an article about basketball coaching legend Tex Winter.

Tex enjoyed great success at Kansas State. A distant cousin (Steve-Manhattan High) & Wally, originally from Gaylord, KS (he attended high school in Norton), started on a #1 ranked team.

FYI: The Douglas Center in Manhattan, KS is named after Steve’s dad. Wally’s dad once workedfor my grandpa on the farm . They remained friends through the years.

Tex was later an Asst for Phil Jackson in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angelas Lakers. In the article, Michael Jordan said that he appreciated that even at the top of his game, Tex would teach him minor adjustments to improve.

Phil Jackson and Tex Winter

Yes, Michael Jordan remained open to learning in basketball while at the top of his game and among the all-time greats of the sport. Unfortunately, some reject learning.

Rhetorically, do you & I remain coachable in life so that we increase our proficiency in serving the Lord for His glory?

How do you respond to advice?

How do you respond to correction?

In Christ,
Rick
